Otranto Bauxite Quarry

Among the most evocative and photographed places in Salento, the Otranto Bauxite Quarry represents a perfect blend of industrial archaeology and natural landscape.

This fascinating corner of Puglia is a must-see for those visiting Otranto and seeking an alternative destination, far from the more crowded beaches but equally spectacular.

A bit of history: from the mines to the iconic site of Salento

The bauxite quarry was built in the early 1940s following the accidental discovery of the mineral from which aluminum is derived. For several decades, the site was exploited as a mining site, until its final decommissioning in 1976, due to high extraction costs and poor economic viability.

Over time, nature has slowly reclaimed the space, transforming what was once an industrial area into one of the most iconic places on the Salento coast.

A breathtaking landscape of red and emerald green

Located in the immediate vicinity of the Punta Palascia Lighthouse, the easternmost point of Italy, the quarry immediately strikes with its striking visual impact. The deep red sedimentary rock, typical of bauxite, contrasts spectacularly with the emerald green lake that has formed at the bottom of the quarry.

This play of colors, accentuated by the sunlight and clear skies, makes the quarry one of the most photographed places in Otranto and the entire Adriatic coast of Salento. It’s not uncommon to encounter photographers, trekking enthusiasts, or simply travelers silently admiring the view.

Useful information and tips for your visit

Because it is an abandoned and unequipped area, it is essential to exercise extreme caution during your visit, especially near the lake. The edges of the quarry can be steep and unstable.

It is important to remember that:

  • The bauxite lake is not suitable for swimming.
  • There are no services or refreshments available.
  • We recommend wearing comfortable, non-slip shoes.

For those who want to swim or relax by the sea, some of Otranto’s most beautiful beaches are nearby, easily reached in just a few minutes.

How to get to the Bauxite Quarry from Otranto

The Otranto Bauxite Quarry is located just south of the city center, but is not always well signposted. For this reason, it is advisable to use a GPS device, such as a smartphone or satellite navigator, and enter the coordinates directly.

Once you’ve parked your car near the designated area, you only need to walk a few hundred meters to reach the famous red lake and enjoy one of the most evocative views in Salento.
